We do the best we can.

One of my best friends shared this Maya Angelou quote with me a few years ago.

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

Actually, my friend paraphrased it a bit. I might like her version even more.

“We do the best we can until we know better and then we do better.”

Do you believe that everyone always does their best?

Do you believe that you always do your best?

I’m a person who’s been really hard on myself at various points in my life.

I’ve wrestled with some regrets for years.

Not anymore.

At this point, I believe that everyone always does their best, including me.

That’s not to say, I’m always pleased with my best.

(There are times I’m quite disappointed.)

I can either beat myself up – or I can learn from it.

Sometimes, we’re scared or stressed or hangry.

In those moments, it can be hard to see our most enlightened option.

Sometimes, when we look back, we kick ourselves because it’s obvious what we wish we’d done.

But we couldn’t see that then….

We did the best we could.

And now, we can only learn from it.

So that next time, we do better.

What’s different when you believe you did the best you could?

What’s different when you believe your boss/employee/partner/parent/kid did the best they could?

Wildly disagree that everyone always does their best?

Let me know.
